Deciding to hire for your business is hard. Especially when trying to figure out if you should hire someone to write your content, the thing that often introduces people to your company.
You're not sure your content is passable, but you also don't know if hiring is your best choice. So you turn to the internet, browse posts and forums, and get stuck in a bog of research.
I'd like to promise that this post will give you all the answers you need and make your decision crystal clear, but no one can promise that. At the end of the day, you have to decide what's best for yourself and your business.
However, I would like to offer advice on when to hire a content writer (and when you shouldn't). As a content writer myself, I know first-hand how we can help you and the value our role brings. These insights won't make the decision for you, but they will make it easier.
You Should Hire a Content Writer If…
Your content isn’t getting results
If you’ve been trying to publish content consistently and hearing nothing but crickets, it might be time to hire a professional. Building a blog takes time, but if you haven't seen increased views, higher search traffic, and better ranking after over a year of posting, you should get help.
A good content writer is always up to date on internet algorithms and understands the current best practices for getting ranked on Google. They can assess your content and help you figure out where to improve. With their help, you can finally get the results, such as ranking higher in search engines or getting people to comment on your posts.
You don’t have time to create content
Content isn’t something you can publish whenever you want. At least not if you want to see results. You have to create an overarching strategy and then plan your content, often months in advance. And don't forget all the time that writing and publishing blog posts take. Many business owners don't have that time, which is why content goes out sporadically.
A content writer writes posts, of course. But a quality one will also help you create and carry out a content plan. They'll have suggestions to improve and grow as your business needs do. You'll get all the benefits of a blog with almost no extra time commitment.
Your writing skills are poor
This isn't meant to be an insult, but if your writing skills aren’t up to snuff, you seriously consider hiring a writer for your business. Nothing is more unprofessional or a bigger turn-off than bad writing. Even if you’re a decent writer, you might not have the skills to write quality content.
Content writers work hard to build the skills for the job. They can convey complex subjects in simple terms, structure posts correctly, and keep readers engaged. Most of us not only write our posts but edit them, too. While you can learn to do this, too, is it something you want to invest your limited time in? Or would you rather hire someone who already has the skills?
You want to improve your online presence
Writing content is one of the best ways to build your online presence and authority. But it takes time to build, and the sooner you start, the better. It'll also require a steady stream of content in your chosen niches, which takes consistent time each month.
A content writer can help create quality monthly content. They'll dive deep into your niche and determine what appeals best to your audience. You'll never have to worry about content again because it appears in your inbox like magic.
You Shouldn’t Hire a Content Writer If…
You’re posting content just because
Ask yourself why you’re posting content online. If it’s your answer is “because people say you should”, then it’s probably not the right time for you to hire a content writer.
Content marketing requires a strategy to work. You need to know your goal, the metrics you're tracking, posting frequency, and more.
If you don’t know any of that, a writer can’t help you. They may try, but without a base understanding of content strategy, you’ll both end up frustrated and won't see results.
You don’t understand SEO
SEO, or search engine optimization, is key to creating content that gets found and ranked in search results. If you want to hire a content writer just to make posts filled with twenty awkward keywords in every post, then hold off.
SEO is more than keyword stuffing these days. In fact, those kinds of posts don't get results these days. That doesn't mean they aren't written, but it isn't a strategy you want to use. Plus, they're so awful to read.
If you don’t have a basic understanding of how SEO works today or a desire to learn, then you should hold off hiring until you do. Any content writer who is happy to keyword stuff isn't worth paying for. (I say this as someone who has had to write that in the past. It's soul-sucking.)
You don’t have the budget
Like most good things, a content writer isn’t cheap. A lower-end writer will charge anywhere from $50-100 per post, and better writers charge $500+. If you aren’t ready to pay those prices, you should hold off hiring.
A quality content writer is worth the price. Blog posts can reap results for years when done properly. But you shouldn’t send your business into the red just to get better content. Wait until you have the budget, then look for a writer.
These are just a few signs you should look for in a business when wondering when to hire a content writer. I hope they help you determine the best decision for you and your business.
